The wedding reception need not cost you a fortune. It is possible, with some careful thought and planning to give your guests the food and drink they have come for, while still sticking to your budget.

Although your guests will need to be fed, and indeed expect it, you do not have to provide a traditional evening sit down meal. There are other options available, and looking in to these can mean a substantial saving on your budget.

You may wish to consider a lunch rather than an evening meal. Again, it does not have to be a sit down meal, a buffet is just as acceptable. The cost of a lunch is likely to be less than that of an evening meal, although costs can be cut here by providing an evening buffet.

If you decide to go with the lunch option, choose a reception venue where there is a pleasant view. If you are organizing your ceremony and reception in one place, then there will usually be a wedding package deal that will provide non alcoholic drinks and a cake cutting and serving service in the overall amount. Sometimes they can even provide the wedding cake, so it is worth asking about this as it will save you time and frayed nerves.

If you have chosen a venue where you have to hire a caterer, then do your sums carefully. It may seem like the cheaper option, but if the caterer has to rent cooking and serving equipment, ultimately, those costs will be passed on to you. Add to that the hassle and organization and it may be more cost effective to go with the package option.

The other major decision that you need to make is what drinks to provide at your reception. Most wedding reception packages will provide soft drinks as part of the package, but if it is a sit down meal, your guests could expect wine on their table. You need to decide if you are going to supply an open bar, where all drinks are free, or maybe just certain drinks, with guests paying for some liquor. Or you may decide to go with the soft drink option, with guests paying for all their alcoholic drinks.

Whatever option you decide, keep your budget in mind and go with the best package that you can find.
